One of France's most respected actors, Daniel Auteuil has established himself as a performer at ease in any number of genres - ranging from period dramas to romantic comedies and crime thrillers. Auteuil had his breakthrough playing the scheming farmer Ugolin in Jean de Florette (1986), for which he won a Best Actor César and a Best Supporting Actor BAFTA. That same year he earned further acclaim for his work in the film's equally popular sequel Manon des Sources, during the filming of which Auteuil met co-star Emmanuelle Beart with whom he had a ten-year relationship and a daughter.

If Depardieu is France's De Niro, Auteuil must be the French Pacino. The two have often starred opposite each other to electrifying effect, particularly in Jean De Florette – an intricate study in man’s cruelty to man based on a Marcel Pagnol novel - in which Auteuil embodies the ugly side of human nature. He is equally impressive in more nuanced roles, such as his repressed businessman in Un Coeur En Hiver (1992), and proved adept at farce in the breezy comedy of The Closet (2001).

In 1999, Auteil collaborated with celebrated director Patrice Leconte on Girl On The Bridge, playing a knife-thrower who embarks on a journey across Europe with a suicidal young woman (Vanessa Paradis). Through further appearances in films including the swashbuckler Le Bossu (1997), the thriller Hidden (2005) and the comedy My Best Friend (2006), he has gained international recognition outside his home country.
