The soulfully beautiful Anna Karina studied dance and painting before moving to Paris to begin a modelling career where she would change her name from Hanne Karin Blarke Bayer. Noticed early on by Jean-Luc Goddard in a series of Palmolive ads, she accepted a major role in his film Le Petit Soldat in 1960. The pair married in March 1961, divorcing only 6 years later, during which time Goddard masterfully captured her melancholic fragility in several of his best films.
