Basil Rathbone may be best known as the definitive screen Sherlock Holmes (with apologies to all the Jeremy Brett fans), but he had a long career stretching over 5 decades. A proficient fencer, he became the man of choice in the 30s whenever a suave villian was required, playing the adversary in films such as Captain Blood, The Mask of Zorro, and - most famously - The Adventures of Robin Hood.
