2008 has been a vintage year for DVD releases so selecting just 12 for our films of the year has been a tough challenge. Rest assured - these 12 cinematic highlights have gone through a gruelling selection process. MovieMail staff and contributors first put forward their favourite five candidates. The lucky nominees then came under days of intense scrutiny as heated discussions raged in the office. The films were watched and rewound, paused and passed around until only the most exceptional cinema remained.
