Film Description
An early sci-fi thriller from Hammer films, X The Unknown sees mysterious events surrounding the sudden appearance of a gaping fissure at a remote Scottish army base: soldiers on manoeuvres nearby develop a debilitating sickness, while a small boy is engulfed by an eerie presence. The radioactive, subterranean monstrosity seems to have been brought to life by recent atomic experiments - but can it ever be destroyed?
Although Nigel Kneale, upset at Hammer getting Brian Donlevy to play his central character in The Quatermass Xperiment, refused permission for the name to be used, the central figure is a Quatermass film in all but name, and sees Dean Jagger give a sympathetic portrayal of the scientist trying to work out how to kill the unknown.
