MovieMail's Review
The complete eight-part series of the densely plotted 1970s BBC drama filmed in Crete. Jack Hedley takes the lead as the ex-soldier whose return to the island sets a Greek tragedy in motion.
With its powerful and enthralling storyline, memorable theme tune and wonderful scenery – it was filmed around Elounda, in eastern Crete before mass tourism changed its character – Who Pays the Ferryman? is classic 1970s television from the BBC. It was created by Michael J. Bird, who also wrote the similarly Mediterranean-themed The Lotus Eaters and The Aphrodite Inheritance.
Jack Hedley takes the lead role as Alan Haldane, a British ex-serviceman and boat-builder who takes early retirement and returns to Crete to look up the friends he made while fighting there with the partisans during the war. However, when he arrives he finds out that Melina, his former lover, has died but that she gave birth to his now grown-up daughter, for whose future he determines to stay on the island. He meets and falls for Melina’s sister, Annika (Betty Arvaniti), but his new found happiness is short-lived when the past comes back to haunt him and he breathes new life into an old family feud.
Densely plotted, well acted and thoroughly compelling, this is one of those series that immediately makes you want to watch the very next episode as its Greek tragedy unfolds.
