Barry Forshaw sees Hardy's universe powerfully evoked in this excellent TV series which drew upon top-quality writers, directors and actors (Billie Whitelaw, John Hurt, Claire Bloom, Ben Kingsley) to bring his 'Wessex Tales' to life.
One of the most celebrated of all television adaptations of great writers - fondly remember by all who saw it - Wessex Tales finally surfaces on DVD in a welcome two-disc set. In the 1970s, the BBC commissioned six writers, six directors and a striking cadre of actors to tackle Thomas Hardy's Tales. The talent included writers such as Dennis Potter and William Trevor and directors such as Mike Newell and actors of the calibre of Billie Whitelaw, John Hurt, Claire Bloom and Ben Kingsley. The adaptations are superlative, with a strong emphasis on the macabre (notably in The Withered Arm and Barbara of the House of Grebe). The Hardyesque universe is powerfully evoked.

Film Description
All six stand-alone episodes of the fondly-remembered 1970s BBC drama series based on short stories written by Thomas Hardy. Episodes are: 'The Withered Arm', 'Fellow Townsmen', 'A Tragedy of Two Ambitions', 'An Imaginative Woman', 'The Melancholy Hussar and 'Barbara of the House of Glebe'. John Hurt, Ben Kingsley, Billie Whitelaw (who was nominated for a BAFTA for her performance in The Withered Arm) and David Troughton are among the actors who feature in the series, which was directed by such directors as Mike Newell, Gavin Millar, Desmond Davis and David Hugh Jones. The stories were adapted by, among others, David Mercer and Dennis Potter. Quality productions all round.
