Based on Michael Morpurgo's novel, Steven Spielberg's War Horse is an epic odyssey of joy, sorrow and high adventure. It's both stirring and awe-inspiring, says Alexander Ballinger.
After his groundbreaking WWII movies and mini-series, Spielberg turns his attention to WWI with his adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s children’s novel, the inspiration for a hugely-popular National Theatre play, now on Broadway.
It tells the story of Joey, a valiant farm horse that goes to war in France after being cruelly separated from his beloved trainer Albert. And it’s a far cry from their bucolic Dartmoor farm, which here becomes a West Country Monument Valley with craggy tors and lowering skies.
Pushed and pulled around, Joey suffers under allied and enemy custodianship in equal measure and becomes a stoic witness to the calamities, cruelties and kindnesses of war. Meanwhile, Albert, now conscripted and scarred by his time in the trenches, never gives up the hope of finding his equine friend.
Logistically and visually – especially Joey’s roles in a cavalry charge, hauling heavy guns and nail-biting entanglement in No Man’s Land – War Horse is both stirring and awe-inspiring.

Based on Michael Morpurgo's novel, Steven Spielberg's War Horse is an epic odyssey of joy, sorrow and high adventure about a boy who searches for his horse after it is taken away to serve in World War I. Benedict Cumberbatch, David Thewlis, Emily Watson and David Kross co-star.
Set in rural England and Europe during the First World War, War Horse begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets - British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter - before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man's Land.
