Classic drama filmed on location in Paris starring Burt Lancaster (a former trapeze artist himself), Tony Curtis and Gina Lollobrigida as trapeze artists who find themselves caught up in a destructive love triangle.
Mike Ribble (Lancaster) was once at the very top of his profession - one of the few men ever to have pulled off the perilous triple somersault. However, Mike has paid the price for his professional daring and is now crippled. He sees something of himself in Tino (Curtis), a talented young performer who begs Mike to teach him how to do the triple somersault. Mike agrees to take Tino under his wing, but the relationship of the two men begins to degenerate when they both find themselves falling for the beautiful Lola (Lollobrigida). Personal rivalry is a dangerous thing in a profession where one slip can be fatal.
With stunts performed by the best circus performers in Europe, Trapeze is a high-flying visual treat with an unforgettable finale.

This colourful melodrama is a very odd film, you might think, from the director of such classics as The Third Man and Odd Man Out. But as well as being a personal filmmaker, Carol Reed was a highly professional purveyor of polished studio product when the occasion demanded (think of his version of Lionel Bart's Oliver!), and this vehicle for the barely-stretched talents of Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis and Gina Lollobrigida (a ménage a trois in a circus setting) is always diverting - even though it's clear that of the three stars, the athletic Burt Lancaster is the one performing most of his own high-wire stunts. There is the bonus of a striking score by British composer Malcolm Arnold. Hide
