MovieMail's Review
James Oliver is stirred by this heartfelt tribute to America's most-decorated WWII soldier, starring Audie Murphy as himself.
Hollywood routinely made biopics about notable figures, but it was unusual for the film to star the person whose life story it tells. Then again, Audie Murphy was a most unusual fellow. Raised in poverty during the great depression, he joined the US army to do his bit in World War Two. He might have been underaged and undersized (5’5” in his stockinged feet) but he went on to become the most decorated soldier in the entire history of the army – and all before his 20th birthday.
That’s quite some story, and it’s recounted here with fine style. A humble man, Murphy was a little embarrassed by the hoop-la surrounding his achievements: his undoubted heroism is here offset by his engaging modesty.
For all the depictions of the horrors of war (plenty of Murphy’s buddies buy the farm), the film shines brightest in its booming battle scenes. No doubt historians will quibble with the accuracy but armchair warriors will have a high time with this film, a heartfelt tribute to a remarkable man.
