Film Description

The legendary Bernard Manning comperes, while fellow stand-up veteran Colin Crompton is 'Mr Chairman' at the Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club - the friendliest working men's club in the North.

Amid the boozing, bingo and committee announcements, the show features rising stars, contemporary acts and internationally acclaimed performers - along with the occasional musical oddity. This release presents the entire third series, with outstanding performances by, among others, Helen Shapiro, Tony Christie (including hits Amarillo and Avenues and Alleyways), Roger Whittaker, The Karl Denver Trio (performing the much-loved Wimoweh), guitar maestro Bert Weedon, George Melly, The Settlers, Paul Daniels, Jackie Trent and Tony Hatch, The Krankies, Howard Keel, Ronnie Dukes and Alvin Stardust; Bernard Manning, rather than pay his bar bill, doubles up as Star Turn for one show.

Although the 'club' was a humorously authentic studio mock-up, this forgotten treasure of '70s light entertainment - building upon the highly successful live-audience format of The Comedians - brought the quickfire comedy, musical variety and convivial atmosphere of a typical Clubland concert night to a national audience. Providing a showcase for several future household names, Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club proved a ratings winner between 1974 and 1977; this third series was originally screened in 1975.
