With a commanding performance from Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), this film of Suzanne Collins' novel doesn’t shy away from brutality, nuance, or political parable, writes Milo Wakelin.
This exhilarating adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best-seller features a commanding, clear-eyed performance from Jennifer Lawrence, the Oscar-nominated young star of Winter’s Bone (2010). In a dystopian future, impoverished Districts must each offer up two children to compete in an annual tournament hosted by their futuristic Capitol. Despite the pageantry, it’s a brutal fight to the death with only one winner. Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) knows the rules but refuses to kill - a direct challenge to the authority of the Capitol’s ruler, President Snow (Donald Sutherland).
Helped by strong source material, striking production design, and an offbeat cast that features Stanley Tucci, Toby Jones and Woody Harrelson, The Hunger Games is a cut above most recent teen fiction adaptations (though there is the inevitable love triangle). Not all the young actors are as compelling as Lawrence, and the action never approaches the violent excesses of the likes of Battle Royale (2000), but director / co-screenwriter Gary Ross (Pleasantville, 1998) has made a mature film that doesn’t shy away from brutality, emotional nuance, or political parable.

Film Description
Sci-fi thriller The Hunger Games, based on the best-selling novels by Suzanne Collins, is set in the ruins of what was once North America. Every year the Capitol of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in The Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which these 24 'Tributes' must fight with one another until one survivor remains. When her little sister is picked to compete, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers in her place. Under the tutelage of inebriated former champion Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson), Katniss goes into training for the fight of her life.
