Heading a top-drawer cast, Romola Garai stars as the alluring young prostitute longing for a better life in Victorian London. It's a fine adaptation of Michel Faber's bestseller, says Peter Wild.

Michel Faber’s sprawling Victorian bestseller The Crimson Petal and the White has leapt to the screen in this recent BBC adaptation with everything that was great about the book – from its sassy and salacious heroine, Sugar (played by Romola Garai, an actress given to many a period costume drama – Emma, Daniel Deronda and Vanity Fair, to name but three – which might wrongfoot the viewer into thinking this was more of the same) to the odd and peculiar detail that Faber dug up during two decades of research – vibrantly intact.

Sugar, a prostitute as happy discussing the failings of Matthew Arnold as doing the old beast with two backs, enchants and bewitches William Wrackham (played with gusto by IT Crowd’s Chris O’Dowd), the son of a perfume manufacturer, and under her subtle tutelage starts to make a name for himself. But there is more to the drama than the rags to riches story of a prostitute as the bright array of star names – X Files’ Gillian Anderson building on her star turn in Bleak House, Richard E Grant playing the abominable Dr Curlew, Sherlock’s Mark Gatiss as William’s well-meaning, if naive, brother Henry – testifies.

Film Description

Based on the bestselling book by Michel Faber, The Crimson Petal and The White is dark-edged period drama at its best, brought to life by a top-drawer cast, including Romola Garai, Chris O’Dowd, Richard E Grant, Mark Gatiss and Gillian Anderson. Spectacular sets and fantastic costumes provide an incredible backdrop which immerses the viewer in a highly realistic portrayal of Victorian London.

Romola Garai stars as Sugar, an alluring and intelligent young prostitute who longs for a better life. When she secures the
patronage of successful businessman William Rackham, she begins to hatch a scheme that will free her from her life in the slums. However, as their worlds become more entwined, Sugar’s plans set in motion a series of events that will change both their lives forever.
