Nunn’s legendary RSC song and dance version of Shakespeare's ribald comedy stars the actors of the RSC at the top of their game, says Alexander Ballinger.
Thankfully for theatre fans, Trevor Nunn’s legendary RSC song 'n' dance version of The Comedy of Errors was filmed by Granada Television in the Seventies. Frustratingly it has only been intermittently available since its television debut, but now timed perfectly for the start of the World Shakespeare Festival, it takes its DVD bow.
Sporting a fabulous cast, it stars Judi Dench as the jealous noblewoman Luciana, who becomes embroiled in a series of comic misadventures when she mistakes (or chooses to believe) her husband’s long-lost twin brother to be her errant spouse. Playing the twin brothers are Roger Rees and Mike Gwilym, whose charm and duplicity respectively allow the audience to suspend their disbelief. Rounding up the principal players are Nickolas Grace and Michael Williams, the brothers’ clownish twin attendants who also can’t tell one master from each other…
With its surreal mix of 1930s costume and Seventies Greek package holiday colour replacing classical Ephesus, Comedy dishes out a dazzling panoply of ribald comedy and show-stopping numbers from a company of Shakespearean actors at the top of their game.
