A natural successor to The Killing, this Danish / Swedish co-production sees a slew of mystifying plot strands that will keep viewers comprehensively hooked, says Barry Forshaw.

The British taste for Scandinavian crime – both on screen and on the page – continues unabated, and this latest entry is one of the quirkiest and most intriguing, utilising familiar themes but giving them an idiosyncratic twist.

A body is discovered on the Øresund bridge between Sweden and Denmark (two bodies, in fact – the torso and legs belong to different victims). An ill-matched female/male cop duo (one Swedish, one Danish) with equal jurisdiction are then obliged to work together on the case. They are wonderfully played by Sofia Helin and Kim Bodnia. Helin’s eccentric Saga Norén shows every sign of becoming as much of a cult figure as The Killing’s Sara Lund – though she takes the latter’s lack of interpersonal skills to extreme levels with her Asperger’s-derived inability to relate to other human beings; in this area, she makes The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’s Lisbeth Salander looked like an agony aunt.

The slew of mystifying plot strands thrown up throughout the episodes will keep viewers comprehensively hooked.

Film Description

Described as a natural successor to The Killing, Scandinavian crime drama The Bridge begins with the discovery of a body at the exact halfway point of the Øresund Bridge; half of the body belongs to a prominent Swedish politician, the other half to a Danish prostitute. Danish and Swedish police become involved and establish a bi-national investigatory team to solve the crime. Laid-back Danish family man, Martin (Kim Bodnia), and Swedish single woman, Saga (Sofia Helin), have to work together to stop the horrific staged murders before the terrorist wins over public opinion with his anti-corruption agenda. Contains all 10 hour long episodes from the first series.
