Film Description
A set of six films from the internationally acclaimed Iranian film director, screenwriter, photographer and film producer Abbas Kiarostami: Certified Copy, Ten, Taste of Cherry, The Wind Will Carry Us, ABC Africa (otherwise unavailable) and 10 on Ten. An active filmmaker since 1970, Kiarostami has been involved in over 40 films, shorts and documentaries, and has been instrumental in testing the boundaries of film language and concept.
Certified Copy (2010) is an Italian-set romantic drama starring Juliette Binoche and William Shimell. Set over the course of a single day in rural Tuscany, the film follows the enigmatic relationship between a man and woman who appear to have just met. James Miller (Shimell) is an English writer who has arrived in Tuscany to promote his new book. When an unnamed French gallery owner (Binoche) attends Miller's lecture discussing the value of original artworks as opposed to copies, the two meet up afterwards and set off together on a sightseeing tour to the village of Lucignano. On arrival, they are mistaken for a married couple - but what is the real nature of the connection between them?
Ten (2002) is an emotive analysis of contemporary Iranian life, following a female driver as she meets ten different passengers in one day. The relationships that develop between the driver and her passengers are explored in such a way as to expose the humanity of these very disparate people.
In Taste of Cherry (1997), Badiei is a middle-aged man driving his white Range Rover through the outskirts of Tehran. He periodically offers lifts or financial assistance to people - a man in a telephone box, a man collecting plastic bags, a soldier - in an attempt to persuade them to bury him. For Mr Badiei intends to commit suicide, and has already dug his own grave - all he needs is someone to place his body in it and cover it up. The film won the Palme D'Or at Cannes in 1997.
In The Wind Will Carry Us (1999), four strangers arrive in the Iranian village of Siah Dareh from Tehran and engage a young local boy as their guide. It is not clear to the locals why the men have come to the village, although when they are seen walking round the old cemetery a rumour starts around the village that they are searching for treasure.
ABC Africa (2001) is a documentary about the AIDS crisis in Uganda.
Finally, in the documentary 10 on Ten (2004), Kiarostami discusses the methods and techniques he used to film his 2002 drama, Ten.
