MovieMail's Review
Series 2 of Sherlock Holmes in the 21st century sees a brilliant rejigging of two of his nemeses: Irene Adler and a gleefully lunatic Moriarty. Bendict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman star.
It was a high-risk strategy, updating Sherlock Holmes to the 21st century. Principal objections? That a fog-bound 19th century London is crucial to the Holmes ethos, and the fact that a new Holmes franchise (with Robert Downey Jr) was a palpable hit. However, the BBC series has proved successful in terms of critical acclaim and audience enthusiasm.
In Season 2, we have a brilliant rejigging of two of Holmes’ nemeses: Irene Adler is now a dominatrix who nonplusses The Great Detective by greeting him naked, and there is gleefully lunatic Moriarty who comes across as an intellectual version of Batman’s enemy The Joker.
Much of the praise showered upon this modern rethink is due to the casting of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Cumberbatch’s very modern portrayal of Holmes as a sociopath to rival (in his own way) Lisbeth Salander is fascinating, but Freeman’s underplayed support should not be underestimated. And then there’s the wonderfully inventive writing by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.
