Lasse Hallström (My Life As a Dog, Chocolat) adapts Paul Torday’s satirical novel into a thoroughly enjoyable romantic comedy. Ewan McGregor stars as a stuffy government official requested to introduce salmon into the desert of Yemen by an eccentric sheikh. Pressured into the odd mission by the PM’s press secretary (Kristin Scott Thomas) and working alongside a consultant (Emily Blunt), whose soldier boyfriend has gone missing in action, his reluctance eventually develops into enthusiasm – and potential romance.

McGregor and Blunt have a likeable chemistry, although acting honours are stolen by Scott Thomas, who relishes her blunt dialogue as the formidable press secretary, a hybrid of Anna Wintour and Malcolm Tucker. The zesty script, by screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty, Slumdog Millionaire), makes some interesting changes, giving McGregor’s character Asperger’s syndrome – adding a new dimension to the role of someone who has to overcome their innate inability to get on with others to achieve happiness.

Film Description

A charming and witty adaptation of the bestselling novel by Paul Torday, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen stars Ewan McGregor as Alfred Jones, a mild-mannered government fisheries official who is approached by management consultant Harriet Chetwode-Talbot (Emily Blunt) to help a sheikh (Amr Waked) realise his long-held dream of introducing fly-fishing to the Middle Eastern desert. The duo soon find themselves swimming against the tide in more ways than one as the extravagant project gathers pace and a few poignant home truths come home to roost. Kristin Scott Thomas co-stars.
