Stacy Peralta's film gives the insightful and often thrilling history of surfing and surf culture from its ancient origins to the present day. Of course the image most people have of surfers today is of the 'laid-back surfer dude', and part of the film's fascination comes from the way this exterior image is contrasted with the fierce competitiveness that drives these adrenaline-junkies to test themselves on ever bigger waves until their feats are quite literally death-defying. The exhilarating footage of surfers riding awesome waves is amazing and insights into their motivation is provided by interviews with the surf legends such as Greg Noll, Laird Hamilton and Jeff Clark. Other interest in the film comes from historical footage � check out those fifties style beach babes on the US west coast! With its music drawn from such diverse acts as Dick Dale and Alice in Chains and all points in between, the well-chosen soundtrack also provides an fitting accompaniment to the film. However, as it should be in a film about the quest for the ultimate wave, it is the waves that are the real stars of the film.
