Directed by Robert Altman
Produced in 1994
Main Language - English
Countries & Regions - American film
After his look at the corrupt film industry in 'The Player', Robert Altman brings us an insight into the fashion industry with Pret a Porter,in which a top designer (Jean-Pierre Cassel) chokes to death, and is presumed murdered. In the subsequent hysteria, the fashion industry is consumed with paranoia, and everybody becomes a murder suspect. Meanwhile, an American sports reporter (Tim Robbins) gets caught up in events when his briefcase is stolen by the dead man's partner.
In his sweeping look into the fashion world populated by everyone from Sophia Lauren to Julia Roberts, Altman employs the same multi-character and overlapping dialogue techniques familiar from previous gems like Short Cuts and Nashville.

The satirical sideswipes at the ripe and easy target of the fashion world are enjoyable but lack real focus, although there's considerable compensation in the form of a starry cast performing a series of enjoyable and entertaining character vignettes, with the love-hate sparring of fashion journos Roberts and Robbins a particularly funny standout.
