Provocative political cinema starring Jean-Pierre Léaud and Anne Wiazemsky, Pigsty unsettles and bewitches in equal measure. It's unnervingly in touch with its times writes Julian Upton.
Not one of Pasolini’s best known films but a highly characteristic one, Porcile (Pigsty) contrasts two allegorical stories — one set in what appears to be the Middle Ages, following a group of savages around a volcanic landscape as they degenerate into cannibalism; the other about the privileged son of an ex-Nazi industrialist rejecting human interaction for the company of pigs — to shine a typically remorseless light on the failings of bourgeois morality and materialism.
The contemporary-set story strongly prefigures Salo in juxtaposing the trappings of upper class elegance with a deathly streak of nihilism, while the cannibal tale is steeped in the visceral paganism of the director’s later Trilogy of Life. Not without humour, both stories nevertheless deliver their anti-capitalist sentiments with the uncompromising power that was to reach its zenith in Pasolini’s later years, and combine to present a uniquely provocative piece of political cinema that can unsettle and bewitch equal measure.
Released between The White Album’s 'Piggies' and Charles Manson’s brutal interpretation of it, Porcile also seems unnervingly in touch with its times.

Decades on from its release, and featuring an all-star cast that includes Jean-Pierre Léaud, Anne Wiazemsky, Franco Citti, Pierre Clémenti and Marco Ferreri, Pigsty remains one of Pier Paolo Pasolini's most controversial and wilfully provocative works – a deranged parody of cinema as revolutionary act.
It comprises parallel stories. In the first, Clémenti and Citti are cannibalistic savages who rampage a world outside of any distinct time or place, and who push against the boundaries of human morality; the second sees Godard regulars Léaud and Wiazemsky as a romantically engaged couple in a contemporary Germany painted as a morass of industrialisation, fascist impulse and bestial instincts.
