Film Description
Seven films from the Spanish director Pedro Almodovar: Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down (1990), All About My Mother (1999), Talk To Her (2002), Bad Education (2004), Volver (2006), Broken Embraces (2009) and The Skin I Live In (2011).
In 'Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down', Ricki, recently released from a psychiatric hospital, kidnaps porn star Marina (Victoria Abril) and tells her, 'I am 23 years old, have 50,000 pesetas and am alone in the world. I would like to be a good husband to you and a good father to your children'. As Ricki attempts to achieve an ordinary life by force, with alternately hilarious, tender or disturbing consequences, we are left wondering about the ties that bind in more conventional relations.
Cecilia Roth stars in 'All About My Mother', a valentine to femininity in all its disguises, motherhood in all its glory and to classic Hollywood melodramas and their diva actresses..
In 'Talk To Her', a housebound male nurse falls in love with a young dancer (Leonor Watling) he sees rehearsing through his window. Marco is a journalist who falls in love with a bullfighter, Lydia (Rosario Flores), after being assigned to interview her. Then Alicia and Lydia are involved in separate accidents which send them both into a comas, and Benigno and Marco meet.
'Bad Education' is a serio-comic examination on the effect of Franco-era religious schooling and sexual abuse on the lives of two longtime friends.
In the supernatural-themed comedy 'Volver', Carmen Maura plays a mother who returns to her home town in order to fix the situations she couldn't resolve during her life. Of her family left in the town, her ghost slowly becomes a comfort to her daughters (Penelope Cruz, Lola Duenas), as well as her grandchild.
In 'Broken Embraces', Mateo Blanco is a scriptwriter who was in a terrbile car accident 14 years ago that killed the woman he loved, Lena (Penelope Cruz), and blinded him. Since then he has gone under the name Harry Caine, choosing to forget his past and the accident, which he never talks about. One night he is required to look after his production manager Judit's son Diego, after he hurts himself. During the time they spend together until Judit returns, Diego asks about when Harry was called Mateo and so Harry decides to tell the boy the story of his painful past, presenting it as fiction in an attempt to keep Diego entertained.
Finally, in the revenge tale 'The Skin I Live In', Antonio Banderas stars as Robert Ledgard, an eminent plastic surgeon whose attempts to cultivate a new form of human skin have led to years of experimentation on a live woman, Vera (Elena Anaya). But as the story of Vera's past emerges, it becomes clear that Robert has a questionable agenda of his own as he manipulates her face and body for his own purposes.
