What do we think of when we say Russian Cinema? Films from the 1920s and 30s, Eisenstein, Vertov, Soviet Montage theory perhaps? Other Russian Cinema is a collection of the countries most notable and memorable Films from the 1960s, when Russia was still part of the USSR (The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) at a time when its Film Industry had grown considerably and moved away from the avant garde cinema it had become associated with.
Viy: Classic Russian horror film from a short story by Gogol. A young priest is ordered to preside over the wake of a witch in a small wooden church in a remote village - which means spending three nights alone with a vengeful corpse with only his faith to protect him.
Treasure Island: Russian version of the classic adventure tale by Robert Louis Stevenson. Aare Laanemets stars as Jim, the dashing young daydreamer who chances upon an old sea chart showing the location of a cache of lost treasure buried on an island by the notorious Captain Flint. Jim and his band venture on a dangerous sea-bound journey to find these ill-gotten gains - but are in for a shock as it transpires that amongst the crew are Long John Silver (Boris Andreyev) and other former members of Flint's gang.
Jack Frost: An award-winning Russian adaptation of the popular fairy tale. Nastenka is treated like a slave by her evil stepmother, who sends her out into the forest to freeze to death. Before he can find Nastenka, her lover Ivan is turned into a bear by an evil warlock. Their only hope is the good wizard, Jack Frost, who lives deep in the wintry forest and might just be able to help them.
Aladdin's Magic Lamp: Soviet-era adaptation of the Arabian fantasy tale in which Aladdin, on pain of death, lays forbidden eyes on a Sultan's beautiful daughter. Only a magic lantern, containing a wish-granting genie, can protect their love.
