Keira Knightley, Andrew Garfield and Carey Mulligan play the three mysterious children in this starkly beautiful adaptation from Ishiguro's novel, It's a dark gem of a film, says Peter Wild.

With Never Let Me Go, an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguroís novel from a script by The Beachís Alex Garland, Mark Romanek has crafted a picture whose dark heart is designed to wrongfoot and perplex expectations at almost every step. Itís a wonderful looking film, with moments of stark beauty recalling Terence Malickís The Thin Red Line combining with a sense of aching fragility.

It concerns three children, Cathy, Tommy and Ruth, who we watch grow to adulthood, with Cathy (Carey Mulligan) nursing an unrequited crush on Tommy (Andrew Garfield) while Ruth (Keira Knightley, outside her comfort zone and all the better for it) sees all and takes what she wants regardless. What complicates matters is that they were raised in a strange boarding school that has a mysterious agenda. To say more would ruin its unsettling story.

Remarkably, the film was damned with faint praise on its cinematic release. It deserves better. Itís something of a gem that warrants serious reappraisal.

Film Description

Adapted for the big screen by writer Alex Garland, Never Let Me Go - based on Kazuo Ishiguro's novel - stars Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield as Kathy, Ruth and Tommy, three childhood friends who reunite as adults to look back on their days at Hailsham, a seemingly idyllic but markedly curious boarding school in rural England.

As the former classmates journey into their shared past, painful memories of love, jealousy and betrayal are brought to the surface, and the sinister secret at the heart of their unusual upbringing is revealed.
