Film Description
Contains every existing episode of Mystery and Imagination - the late 60s anthology series that presented a selection of Gothic tales from major 19th century writers. Contains adaptations of Sheridan le Fanu's Uncle Silas, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Bram Stoker's Dracula and Jewel of the Seven Stars (The Curse of the Mummy), Robert Louis Stevenson’s nihilistic The Suicide Club, George Dibdin Pitt's Sweeney Todd, Edgar Allen Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher and Mrs. Oliphant's The Open Door.
A distinguished cast includes Ian Holm as Dr Frankenstein, Denholm Elliot as Dracula, Patrick Mower (Callan) and Freddie Jones, who gives an astonishing performance as the demented barber, Sweeney Todd.
This release brings together all six of the specially commissioned feature-length teleplays which made up the latter incarnation of Mystery and Imagination, produced by Thames Television, and originally screened between 1968 and 1970.
