A fascinating documentary, in which flamboyant filmmaker Emir Kusturica celebrates the incredible story of Diego Maradona; sports hero, living God of football to his fans, champion of the people for many Latin Americans and an inspiration to millions throughout the world. This is less a sports documentary than a personal, political and cultural exploration of the man, his beliefs and his influence. Given unprecedented access, Kusturica follows Maradona from Buenos Aires to Naples, from Havana to Belgrade, joining him on meetings with the likes of Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez. Retracing his life Maradona revisits the poor neighbourhood of his birth for the first time in decades. From there he also frankly describes his fall from grace, the damage to his reputation and family that his years of drug abuse caused, and the wasted opportunities to give more to football. By turns sad, funny and controversial, this full and intimate collaboration fulfils Kusturica’s opening ambition: to reveal the man behind the myth.
