If The Thick of It reinvented Yes Minister for the New Labour era, then In the Loop is a post-Cold War Dr Strangelove, in which bland glass-walled offices replace the cavernous War Room and where decisions to go to war are made by career-nervous mandarins rather than gum-chewing generals.
The big-screen version of Armando Iannucci's hit political satire stars Tom Hollander as hapless Secretary of State Simon Foster, whose ambivalence to a new US/UK-led war lands him in some very hot transatlantic waters. To make matters worse, an irate constituent (Steve Coogan) won't shut up about a collapsing garden wall. On the other side of the pond, dove-ish US Secretary of Diplomacy Karen Clark (Mimi Kennedy) and General Miller (James Gandolfini) see the timorous Foster as a potential anti-war ally, and invite him over to Washington. But they haven't counted on Britain's very own Weapon of Mass Destruction, the PM's 'enforcer' Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi), who arrives in hot pursuit with a payload of F-Bombs that would make Derek and Clive duck and cover.
Iannucci's distinctive brand of satire translates superbly well to the American political scene, and it's fun to see familiar faces from The Thick of It running around Washington landmarks and the UN Headquarters. Even though the plot has (hopefully) lost some of its political relevance in the post-Bush era, this painfully funny British comedy has the kind of laughs – and the quality of swearing – that will outlast any administration.

This razor-sharp political comedy satirising the inner mechanics of the ‘special relationship’ between London and Washington is the talked-about British film of the year. A sharp, foul-mouthed political comedy from the reigning king of satire, writer and director Armando Iannucci (The Thick of It, The Day Today, Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge), In The Loop creates a world in which the US President and UK Prime Minister fancy a war, but not everyone agrees that war is a ‘good thing’. Starring Peter Capaldi, James Gandolfini, Tom Hollander, Gina McKee, Chris Addison, Anna Chulmsky, Mimi Kennedt and Steve Coogan, the film reunites the award-winning writing team behind The Thick of It.
