Adapted from George Eliot's novel and directed by Tom Hooper (The King's Speech), this is a strongly-cast, powerful tale of love and self-discovery in late Victorian England.
To celebrate Tom Hooper’s recent Oscar triumph with The King’s Speech, it’s a perfect time to re-discover his acclaimed 2002 three-part adaptation of George Eliot’s final novel, a powerful tale of love, identity and self-discovery set in late Victorian England.
Hugh Dancy stars as the eponymous Deronda, a young man who finds himself caught between Gwendolen (Romola Garai), a spoilt English rose trapped in a loveless marriage to the villainous Henleigh Grandcourt (Hugh Bonneville), and Mirah (Jodhi May), a tragically beautiful Jewish singer who he rescues from drowning.
It’s an evocative depiction of a man forced to choose between two worlds, and the series contrasts the superficial facade of upper-class English society with the warm spirituality of working-class Jewish life.
Helmed by Hooper, then aged only 28, from a screenplay by Andrew Davies (Middlemarch, Pride And Prejudice,), this lavish BBC production features many of the director’s characteristic touches, with meticulously staged interiors, inventive camera-angles and wide-angle lenses, and the superlative cast includes Celia Imrie, James Fox, Greta Scacchi and Barbara Hershey.
A sumptuous BBC adaptation of George Eliot's novel Daniel Deronda, directed by Tom Hooper, the Oscar-winning director of 'The King's Speech', adapted by Andrew Davies and charting an intense love story in Victorian high society.
Daniel Deronda becomes entranced by frivolous beauty Gwendolen Harleth and though she shares his feelings fate conspires to keep them apart. Gwendolen, facing financial ruin, is forced into an oppressive marriage with the sinister but wealthy aristocrat Henleigh Grandcourt while Daniel finds a new life through his friendship with Jewish singer Mirah Lapidoth.
Adapted by renowned writer Andrew Davies (Pride And Prejudice, Middlemarch, Tipping The Velvet) this highly-acclaimed costume drama boasts a glittering cast including Hugh Dancy, Romola Garai, Hugh Bonneville, Jodhi May, Greta Scacchi, Edward Fox, Celia Imrie and Barbara Hershey.
