MovieMail's Review

Three girls negotiate the minefield of college life in this comedy that marks a welcome and hugely pleasurable return for one of modern cinema’s great humorists, writes Mike McCahill.

Whit Stillman’s first film for 13 years plays almost like an origin story for the lovestruck characters the writer-director outlined in such 90s gems as Metropolitan and The Last Days of Disco, though no prior knowledge is required to enjoy it. In its plotting, this sprightly campus comedy equally recalls Mean Girls and Clueless, as new girl Lily (Analeigh Tipton) falls in with the haughty demoiselles operating Seven Oaks University's Suicide Prevention Center. Intent on giving our heroine the benefits of their teaching, this trio naturally have much to learn themselves.

Like Eric Rohmer, Stillman believes that character is best revealed through polished conversation; accordingly, Damsels riffs on such arcane topics as the vital importance of scented soap, and the ins-and-outs of the Cathar faith. A quartet of very appealing young actresses lap up the kind of lines and ideas you don’t often find in multiplex romcoms, but it’s not all talk: sundappled musical numbers expand some way beyond Disco’s mirrorball scenes. A welcome and hugely pleasurable return for one of modern cinema’s great humorists.

Film Description

An offbeat romantic comedy from Whit Stillman (The Last Days of Disco) following about a trio of beautiful girls trying to negotiate the minefield of college life.

Greta Gerwig stars as Violet, the emotionally fragile yet overbearing leader of a pretentious group of girls who imagine themselves superior to everyone else when in fact they are for the most part ignored by their fellow students. Everyday concerns such as dating disappointments, essay grades and social mores give way to the more perilous pitfalls of female friendship after the girls take it upon themselves to befriend new student Lily (Analeigh Tipton).
