Directed by Ingmar Bergman
Produced in 1972
Main Language - Swedish with English subtitles
Rural Sweden in the late 1800s, and three sisters are living effectively cut off from the rest of society. Agnes (Harriet Andersson) is terminally ill and had become a great emotional burden on sisters Karin (Ingrid Thulin) and Maria (Liv Ullman). Through flashbacks we learn of the emotional resentments and deceits that have marked the sisters lives in interconnecting ways, against the backdrop of Agnes's recurrent cries of pain in her final days. In contrast to this filial bitterness only the servant Anna (Kari Sylwan) remains truly faithful and openhearted toward Agnes, as death approaches.
Bergman avoids period prettiness; instead colour is used expressively and symbolically to suggest the tormented characters' troubled states of mind. A stunning film, one of Bergman's most formally controlled and interesting works.
