MovieMail's Review
Carlos Reygadas' Battle In Heaven was one of the most controversial films to be screened at Cannes last year; some denounced its "exploitation" of non-professional actors, who feature in some very graphic sex scenes, whilst others admired its ambition and clear display of directorial expertise, arguing that it should have won the Palme d'Or. It's certainly an intense film; potentially harrowing subplots and Reygadas' unforgiving use of close-up make for occasionally uncomfortable viewing. It is well worth making the effort however, for the film is a powerfully rewarding experience.
A chauffeur and his wife try to kidnap a baby, a plan which goes disastrously wrong, resulting in the infant's death. Wracked with guilt, he finds solace in his relationship with a general's daughter, who works as a part-time prostitute. Desperately seeking redemption, the chauffeur's decisions gradually unsettle his life even further. Unforgettable image follows unforgettable image - one lengthy tracking shot around a Mexican suburb is particularly enduring. Like his award-winning debut Japon, Reygadas has created a stunning, if difficult, work. It's undoubtedly one of the most startlingly original films of last year, confirming the talent of its audacious director.

Film Description
Reygadas' controversial hit from Cannes has drawn plaudits and derision in equal measure and occasioned much debate over the sexually explicit pre-credits sequence. Using non-professional actors, Reygadas gives a poignant insight into the actions and thoughts of a kidnapper in Mexico, who tries to live with the consequences of his actions as well as his infatuation with his employer's daughter.
