Police try to flush criminals from an apartment block in this exhilarating martial arts riot. This is console-game cinema par excellence, writes Mike McCahill.
There aren’t many action movies made by Welshmen in Indonesia. Gareth Huw Evans forsook conventional career logic and went East to seek his fortune, finding there both a dynamic martial art (pencak silat) to document and some evidently relaxed health-and-safety legislation to set against the tautness of his narrative line. Charting the efforts of a plucky cop (Iko Uwais) to survive in a tower block after a bungled police raid, Evans has returned with console-game cinema par excellence: the further our hero ascends, the higher the stakes.
This combo of fresh eyes and limbs allows the film to kick the genre about as far as it might now legally go, fostering a style of carnage that is as compellingly grungy as John Woo’s once was baroque. The whipsmart Uwais and his co-stars attain a weird and wonderful harmony with the bashed-up sets they careen through: each floor is furnished with a new variation of limp striplights and graffiti-bruised walls, finished off with broken chairs, tables and (increasingly) necks. In every sense, it’s a riot.

Deep in the heart of one of Jakarta's most deprived slums stands an impenetrable high-rise apartment block that is to be avoided at all costs. It is a no-go area even to the bravest and most experienced police officers. However, in a desperate bid to flush the violent criminals and their ruthless leader from their haven once and for all, an elite SWAT team is tasked with infiltrating the building and raiding the apartments floor by floor, taking out anyone who stands in their way. Once inside, it soon becomes terrifyingly apparent that the real problem at hand is surviving long enough to be able to get out again.
