Written and directed by George Lucas several years before his era-defining Star Wars saga, THX 1138 is a peek into a dystopian future where a totalitarian state pump sedative drugs into the bald worker drone population. Robert Duvall plays THX 1138 who begins to sink secret stimulants and is finally jailed after making companion LUH 3417 pregnant. Aided by a typically creepy Donald Pleasence as SEN 5241 all three attempt to escape from the sterile police controlled confinement to a libertine new world. Adapted from a short film Lucas made at University and produced by Francis Ford Coppola, THX 1138 lacks the verve and pace of his later sci-fi efforts but the weighty atmosphere is lightened by the crystal stylishness of the setting. Whilst cooked up in the overheated frenzy of early 70’s Hollywood this intriguing slice of future-shock has a carefree 60’s vibe at its core. Hide

I own the U.S Blu-ray edition, and this U.K edition will more or less be the same and require at least 230kbs of memory for it to load up properly (possibly due to the disc's elaborate menu). You will need an SD card or USB stick in order for this disc to play. Sony Playstation 3 consoles will have no problem playing the disc thanks to the internal HDD. Hide
