"When you get in trouble and you don't know right from wrong, give a little whistle!" Jiminy Cricket and the wooden boy thoroughly charm Alex Davidson.

Walt Disney’s second feature was arguably his greatest achievement. A box office flop on its release, it is now recognised as a masterpiece, blending superb animation (abstract artist Oskar Fischinger contributed) with strong storytelling and unforgettable characters. It was made when the Disney studio did not shy away from the darker elements of fairytale; the film’s toughness still startles nearly 70 years on. No villains are punished for their wrongdoing, yet the blameless Geppetto suffers throughout. Mostro the whale’s violent attacks rival Jaws, and the last few scenes in Pleasure Island are the stuff of nightmares. Thank heavens, then for Jiminy Cricket, one of Disney’s immortal comic characters, whose big number, the Oscar-winning ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’, is a welcome soothing lullaby amidst the terror. Pinocchio also manages to be moving without resorting to schmaltz, and, as with the Disney studio’s very best films, it really does appeal to both children and adults alike.

Pinocchio (Disney)

Film Description

Walt Disney's second full-length animated feature focuses on the famous wooden puppet who wants nothing more than to be a real boy. Pinocchio (voiced by Dick Jones) is the wood-carved creation of Geppetto. When the pair are visited by the Blue Fairy, she grants Pinocchio the opportunity to become a real, flesh-and-blood boy - but only if he learns to be brave, honest and unselfish. To this end Pinocchio is granted a conscience, one which comes in the shape of the diminutive Jiminy Cricket (Cliff Edwards). However, Pinocchio soon discovers that being good is not as easy as it sounds.

Pinocchio won two Oscars, for Best Song ('When You Wish Upon a Star') and Best Original Score.
