Film Description

Juliette Binoche stars in this French drama about female students who turn to prostitution to fund their university studies.

Anne (Binoche) is a journalist writing an article about student prostitution for Elle magazine. She finds herself drawn to two young women in particular: impoverished Polish student Alicja (Joanna Kulig) and Charlotte (Anais Demoustier), who comes from one of the vast and anonymous housing estates on the outskirts of Paris. Her meetings with the two independent young women are profound and unsettling, and as she learns more about their experiences she is drawn into their world, which stands in marked contrast to her own bourgeois life, and she begins to question her own firmly-held convictions about money, sex, marriage and motherhood.

Binoche gives a characteristically committed performance in Malgorzata Szumowska's frank drama, whose camera never shies away from the details of the girls' work.
