A French romantic comedy about grief and the rediscovery of an appetite for life, this charming film, featuring the luminous presence of Audrey Tatou, keeps you guessing, writes Nick Riddle.
A comedy about grief? Yes, but this is a French comedy, with wisps of melancholy, brief flights into fantasy, reflective voice-overs - and the luminous presence of Audrey Tatou.
Nathalie (Tatou) meets and marries the handsome François (Pio Marmaï), but their romantic idyll is cut short by a fatal accident. The widowed Nathalie enters a kind of limbo, throwing herself into her work while fending off the attentions of her boss (Bruno Todeschini). But when she plants a smacker on the gauche and gangly Markus (François Damiens), a new and very different sort of courtship begins.
Adapted and co-directed by David Foenkinos from his own novel, Delicacy has its faults. For example, there are some clever little visual jeux d’esprit that sometimes don’t mesh with the tone of the film. But this unevenness has a happy side-effect: for all the inbuilt predictability of the romantic comedy genre, Delicacy genuinely keeps you wondering how things will turn out. Tatou and Damiens are an unlikely but appealing onscreen couple that you find yourself rooting for.

A romantic comedy starring Audrey Tautou, Delicacy sees her play a young, beautiful woman with a lovely marriage - but then her husband dies in an accident and it brings her world crashing down. For the next few years, she focuses on work, setting aside her emotions. After a spontaneous and inexplicable kiss between her and co-worker Markus (François Damien) the two embark upon an own emotional journey that asks the question - can we really choose how we rediscover our taste for life?
