MovieMail's Review

David Cronenberg's surreal, sardonic take on Don DeLillo's 'unfilmable' novel is one of the most radical Anglophone films in years. Lead Robert Pattinson is superb, writes James Oliver.

As a billionaire master-of-the-universe, Eric Packer (Pattinson, superb) gets what he wants, even if it means ignoring death threats to be driven across town, through gridlocked streets, on the day of the biggest deal of his life, just to get a haircut. Eric doesn't know, however, what this haircut will cost him.

Set almost exclusively within a limousine, Don Delillo's original novel was widely held to be unfilmable. David Cronenberg, though, is not one to let such things deter him: 'they' said Naked Lunch and Crash were 'unfilmable' too. Like those films, Cronenberg here fuses his sensibilities to those of the novelist, honouring the admixture of futurology and paranoia for which Delillo is famed. The result is, in every sense, a mental film: although it largely plays out inside a car, it's debatable how much of it really takes place in the yet more restricted space of Eric's head.

A study of modernity and uncertainty, this sardonic, surreal road movie might be Cronenberg's most audacious; it's certainly amongst the most radical Anglophone films in years.

Film Description

Robert Pattinson stars in David Cronenberg's adaptation of Don DeLillo's Cosmopolis.

Eric Packer (Pattinson) is a 28 year-old finance billionaire who sets out to cross New York City in his luxurious white stretch limo to get to a hairdressing appointment. But it soon becomes apparent that the city is in turmoil, and Packer's journey is obstructed by various traffic jams caused by a presidential visit to the city, widespread rioting, and several uncanny encounters with his ex-wife. Meanwhile, his empire seems to be collapsing around his ears, and he becomes increasingly certain as the day wears on that someone is trying to kill him. Paul Giamatti, Juliette Binoche and Samantha Morton co-star.
