Film Description
A visually arresting story of religious conflict set in medieval England, where a peasant girl is so attracted to a statue of the Virgin Mary she is walled up in a church as an anchoress, a holy woman with responsibility for blessing villagers. Then the priest has her mother tried as a witch, so she digs herself out of her cell - a crime for which the punishment is death.
Inspired by the records of the real Anchoress of Shere, Christine Carpenter (who was voluntarily walled up in a tiny cell adjoining a church), Anchoress vividly evokes life of a remote medieval village whilst also addressing the gulf between patriarchal power and female ritual and rebellion.
