Finally seeing a proper release after years of music licensing problems, this is one of the most acclaimed films by an African-American filmmaker. It was one of the first 50 films to be selected for the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry and was chosen by the National Society of Film Critics as one of their 100 Essential Films. It shows the black Los Angeles ghetto of Watts in the mid-1970s through the eyes of Stan, a sensitive dreamer who is growing detached and numb from the psychic toll of working at a slaughterhouse. As the screenwriter Michael Tolkin once wrote, "If Killer of Sheep were an Italian film from 1953, we would have every scene memorized."
The movie's soundtrack takes in Elmore James and Rachmaninoff, Paul Robeson and Earth, Wind and Fire, among others.
