Five films for the less sensitive movie lover in your life from the era where hair was big and explosions were loud. Comprises:
Platoon (Oliver Stone, 1986)
A brutal depiction of the Vietnam war, recounted from Stone's own experiences as a soldier. He creates a blood-drenched war zone in which a young soldier is torn between two officers whose moral temperaments are in direct opposition. An emotionally exhausting, deeply anti-heroic depiction of America's great military defeat, heightened by bold direction.
Raging Bull (Martin Scorsese, 1980)
Towering Colossus-like over the mass of 1980s and contemporary Hollywood product, this is a ferociously intense, unflinchingly honest and cinematically brilliant portrait of troubled middleweight champ Jake la Motta. De Niro's performance is simply awesome - making most others, and unfortunately his own later efforts, appear almost half-hearted.
Rain Man (Barry Levinson, 1988) [unexpectedly sensitive addition to the set, this]
Tom Cruise is outstanding (though Dustin Hoffman got the Oscar) in this tale of a selfish city-slicker who must contend with his autistic brother, when their father leaves the latter his fortune.
Die Hard (John McTiernan, 1988)
A stylish, spectacular, heavy duty action flick, Die Hard almost single-handedly revived the concept of the disaster movie for the postmodern, MTV audience. Armed only with a shabby vest, Willis outwits a band of 'European' terrorists who've taken over an LA office block, establishing himself as an iconic, superheroic everyman in the process.
The Terminator (James Cameron, 1984)
Next to 'Blade Runner', this is one of the most innovative and striking sci-fi extravaganzas to hit the screens in our time. Schwarzenegger is the fiercest and relentless killing machine.
