MovieMail's Review
Francesca Annis had previously played the role of notorious society beauty Lillie Langtry in the 1975 ATV mini-series Edward VII. She so impressed the writers of that series with her portrayal that they then created Lillie with only her in mind for the role - and an enticing role the life, times and exploits of 'the Jersey Lily' is too. Courted and bedded by princes and peers, hostess to Victorian high society, model for the finest artists of her day, Langtry flouts convention and takes full advantage of her wit and beauty to capture the hearts of her many notable lovers. Of her, George Bernard Shaw said that “she has no right to be intelligent, daring and independent, as well as lovely”; Oscar Wilde (a role here relished by the versatile Peter Egan) claimed he “would rather have discovered Lillie Langtry than America.”
A Victorian costume drama with a huge cast and notable characters is a dream for costumiers and audiences alike and this fondly-remembered series is no exception. It won critical favour too, with Annis winning a BAFTA for Best Actress.

Film Description
Francesca Annis stars as the incomparable Lillie Langtry, the woman who defied the moral traditions of Victorian England and nineteenth century America and became one of the most celebrated and scandalous women of her time. Bold, intelligent and witty, her beauty and brazen determination liberated her from a woman's 'proper' place in society. Rising from modest beginnings to the bed of royalty, she attracted attention from kings, judges, princes and commoners - and manipulated them as she desired. With over 1,000 performers, meticulous detailing of the era and a central performance that earned Francesca Annis great critical acclaim, this was a landmark TV costume drama.
