Mike Leigh's class struggle comedy of manners, High Hopes, sees a disparate cast of characters swim in and out of each others lives against a background of London and its suburbs.
Left-wing bike messenger Cyril Bender (Philip Davis) would like to machine gun the Royal family; his mother's appalling yuppie neighbours (Lesley Manville and David Bamber) play yuppie sex games, while deep in suburbia Cyril's desperately consumerist sister Valerie (Heather Tobias) fails to arouse her wide-boy husband Martin (Philip Jackson) with the suggestion that he be Michael Douglas and she a virgin. Then Cyril's mother finds herself stranded, forced to turn to her snooty neighbours for help. And when Cyril's sister Valerie stages a surprise party for her Mum's 70th birthday, the stage is set for a disaster from start to finish...
