Fresh from helming the Oscar-nominated Twist of Faith, Kirby Dick (still best known for his acidic documentary, Sick: The Life & Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist), turned his hand to the world of US film ratings. Focusing upon the Motion Picture Association of America's obscure rating system, This Film... wages a two-pronged attack. Firstly, Dick investigates the way in which films are awarded their ratings (noting along the way that independent films suffer a rawer deal than studio movies, sex is penalised more than violence, gay sex is penalised more than straight sex etc). Secondly, Dick hires a private detective to spy on the MPAA building itself and ascertain the identity of the MPAA ratings board, whose names are kept secret. All of which is tremendous, zippy fun in a sort of Michael Moore / Morgan Spurlock sort of way, especially when the films own NC-17 rating for graphic sexual content comes under discussion. With interviews from the likes of Kevin Smith (Clerks) and Mary Harron (American Psycho) this is a must-see for anyone interested in the bizarre workings of the US film industry.
