Surreal Czech animator Jan Svankmajer is just about the last word in stop-motion animation, cited by those in the know as an immense influence on everyone from the Brothers Quay through to the likes of Terry Gilliam and Tim Burton (whose Nightmare Before Christmas is still, strangely, possibly the easiest entry route to the considerably ‘harder’ work of Svankmajer). Both disturbing and childlike, and drawing on the likes of Poe and Kafka and Lewis Carroll, Svankmajer is a true one-off, a real genius ploughing a truly individual furrough.
