Max Ophuls Films
Born Maximillian Oppenheimer in Saarbrucken, Germany in 1902, Max Ophuls (as he later styled himself, a pseudonym adopted to avoid embarrassing his garment-manufacturer father) made films – classic films, films with a marked tendency to appear on lists of the best films ever with alarming frequency, films like Letter from an Unknown Woman and La Ronde – in Hollywood, Germany and France. A huge influence on the young Stanley Kubrick, Max Ophuls is justly feted as one of the greats.
