Forty years of films and TV plays about ordinary people in 'real' social situations is a rare achievement, especially when they display a combination of genuine social comment and real warmth. Loach's portrayal of British working class life has always been honest and unsentimental. His cinematic career began with a trilogy - Poor Cow (1967), Kes (1969) and Family Life (1971) - all of which dealt with issues of poverty and broken family life.

Most recently, documentary The Spirit of '45 uses archive material to present a committed, rousing and often moving film essay about how the spirit of unity which buoyed Britain during the war years carried through to create a vision of a fairer, united society.
